Artist Comments: "The time has come," the Walrus said, "To talk of many things: ..." - from Lewis Carroll's "The Walrus and the Carpenter" The time has come to talk of the dangers facing the walrus, which is an endangered species. The walrus' only enemies are the killer whale, the polar bear, and man. The walrus was hunted for centuries by Russians, North Americans, and others for its valuable ivory tusks and its oil. The First Nations peoples of the north hunted the walrus for food, fuel, and raw materials for making tools, shelter, boats, sleds, and clothing. Among the threats facing the walrus today are illegal hunting, and nearby human activities from commercial fishing and oil and gas exploration. Today, there are approximately 250 000 Pacific walruses and even fewer Atlantic walruses left.
