Angels tell shepherds

Pastor Commentaries,

Dean Kurpjuweit, Pastor - www.nextchristiancommunity.org
There are a lot of angels in the Christmas Story.  Per capita, it is easily the most we see in any bible story.  They are everywhere: singing, appearing in dreams, and talking to people.  The angels are all around Jesus and the people all around Him.

In scripture we read of Angels performing many different tasks at God’s behest.  They fight battles, give messages, sing, and provide protection.  Angels appeared to be an ever-present part of the spiritual world.  I believe they still are.

However, the trend today is to make people into Angels.  ‘She is such an angel’ is often spoken of a little girl.  Or ‘that person is an angel’ is commonly used to refer to a person who has done a good deed.  I don’t think there is anything necessary wrong in this, but, I believe that there is the potential to distract from the real thing.  People are not Angels and Angels are not people.  Nor are angels God.

Instead, Angels are real and among us.  They respond to God’s beckoning and perform the same tasks that they did in ancient times.  They bring us messages, they protect us, they fight on God’s behalf and they sing praises to Yahweh.  I believe that many of us need to be more awakened to the presence of a live and active spiritual world.  After all, if Angels appeared to lowly shepherds, surely they can appear to us.
