Métis Memories of Residential Schools

A Testament to the Strength of the Métis

Tile #18

Title: Empty Communities = Stolen Children

Empty Communities = Stolen Children

Teaching Statement:

Indigenous families, including Métis, were threatened with imprisonment if they tried to keep their children at home. Many children did not return home from residential schools because they died there.

Reflective Questions:

In what ways have the Métis resisted colonial, oppressive forces to lobby for their rights?

What are some of the intergenerational impacts of residential school survivors?

If you were raised in a residential school, how do you think you would learn how to be a parent? What would you have learned about parenting in residential school?

If, year after year, you were isolated from your family, how would you learn to be part of a family?
