Métis Memories of Residential Schools

A Testament to the Strength of the Métis

Tile #24

Where Am I?

Where Am I?

Teaching Statement:

The deliberate removal of children from families to their placement in remote residential schools. Many survivors report they felt unrelenting despair, isolation and loneliness.

Reflective Questions:

How does the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples help to ensure this colonial tactic is not enforced on Indigenous peoples again? What long term effects do unrelenting despair, isolation and loneliness have on the brain development of children?

How might trauma-informed teaching assist in those endeavours?

If you were raised in an institution and unable to depend on others to meet more than your basic needs, how might this impact on your ability to trust others?
