By taking children away from their families and communities, the residential schools were designed to sever healthy and essential family connections. Residential schools were often located far away from Indigenous communities to discourage children from spending time with their family and to isolate them from their community. Many children opted to run the risk of escaping the schools even in dangerous winter conditions, many did not survive.
