Welcome Artists! (MCH)

We are thrilled to have you involved in this exciting project! The mural will be positioned at the front entrance of the Montreal Children’s Hospital and will welcome families as they enter in the hopes that it will provide some joy and comfort. The mural will consist of hundreds of paintings that unite together as one.

 If you haven’t checked out the website already, here are a couple of links to some projects similar to the one we will be doing for the hospital.

How to particapate…

1. Officially register by choosing your tile.

Tiles are in solid tones (Hoping for lots of blue tiles.) or a challenging shape,
Check out the samples below to see how tiles have been created in previous murals.
Choose a tile that speaks to you.,
Go through the complete “cart” process, supplying your complete mailing address that will be use to ship your tile (there is no cost to you)

2. Paint your tile

  • a 12″ x 12″ tile will be shipped to the address that you supplied,
    save the cardboard it comes in as you will resend your tile in this when shipping back
  • Ideally use acrylic paint but we would do our best to include any medium if acrylic does not work for you.
    as long as it can be adhered to the tiles we send and works with the colours you have been given

  • Paint the entire tile yet maintaining the color tone  Don’t leave our primer/paint showing. eg. If it’s blue re- paint in your blues

  • If your tile has a shape be aware of tile orientation – See arrow on back-
    Make sure your tile is painted with the arrow pointing up otherwise your tile could end up UPSIDE DOWN or SIDEWAYS  in the mural.

  • Paint in your style and have fun. Ultimately this should reflect your art

3. Consider the subject matter

Your artwork will be part of a mural that will be the first thing that a lot of children will see. We want the theme to be positive, fun, playful and welcoming.

Some suggestions from the MHC committee on some of themes, images and emotions that could be reflected in the individual artwork:

  • Native fauna to Quebec – black bears, seals, whales, caribou, moose, white-tailed deer, puffins, owls, etc.
  • Native flora to Quebec – blue iris, lilacs, dandelions, mayflower, wild strawberries, wild blueberries, and other recognizable local flowers/plants 
  • References to embroidery, beading and other material culture of the Cree, Metis, Inuit and other Indigenous peoples of Quebec
  • The main core values of our institution: “Optimism”, “Resilience”, “Innovation”, “Life” and “Community”
  • Welcoming
  • Safety
  • Playfulness of childhood
  • Caring and comfort
  • Families (diverse)
  • Diversity and inclusion (ethnocultural, ability, gender, socioeconomic)
  • Hope and acceptance
  • Rural and Northern Quebec

4. Return your Painting

Keep all original cardboard packaging and mailing pouch so you can return the panel back. 
When you are done your painting request a shipping label, Print your label and reuse the original packing to ship your painting back. 

If you have a title, write it on the back. Do not ahere anything to the back as the tiles are mounted to a panel.

If able, feel free to share your experience and artwork on your social platforms.

Cool tone examples

Although there may be an important line or shape that you can try to make work within your painting, most of the brush strokes can be ignored and are they are just there to help you focus on tone and value. Cool tones are usually the tiles representing the background of the over all mural subject matter and are best choice if you want the most freedom in your painting. Feel free to use contrasting warm colours for details and highlights – Use the 80/20 rule- if at least 80% of the painting is cool tones 20% of the image could be any other colour

Warm tone examples

Although there may be an important line or shape that you can try to make work within your painting, most of the brush strokes are there just to help you focus on tone and value, warm tones are usually the tiles representing the main image in the overall mural. Contrasting cool tones can be used for details and highlights – As above use the, Use the 80/20 rule.

Edge Shape examples

Shapes usually make up the edge of the main subject matter or intricate areas within the design. For some artists these are their favourite pieces because they are the greatest challenge and can really be a lot of fun if handled correctly! If done in a creative, clever way they can become the conversation piece of the entire mural. Less freedom but more “wow” potential. Best choice if you are looking for a challenge!
