Title: the BEAUTIFUL Jim Key
It is a fascinating story about Jim Key,….the BEAUTIFUL Jim Key…. and his owner and trainer who were instrumental in promoting the start of the American Humane Education Society. William Key, an ex-slave from Shelbyville, Tenn., a Civil War veteran and an acclaimed horse-whisperer, is recognized for helping to start a worldwide animal rights movement in the early 1900’s. And Beautiful Jim Key was the star who helped promote that humane movement. When I received my panel, I was actually reading the book about Jim’s fame and how Jim was a horse who could read, spell, count…even do addition and make change!! The story of how this all came about just intrigued me…and prompted me to depict this wonderful horse and his owner who saw the intelligence in his animal and showed the world what kindness and caring can do for a animal who is often only thought of as a beast of burden.
